For most people, summer is peak season — the time to log as many hours of activity or days abroad as possible. But find yourself compelled to experience the world by surf, and summer becomes a time of patience and quiet contemplation.
We wait for the ocean to come alive again. For winter swell to pulse once more.
Mid-summer, the sleeping sea occasionally cracks an eyelid. Surf awakens. The hawk-eyed jump at the opportunity to dance for a few short moments. But it’s always different than what’s coming — what we learn to wait so patiently for. The feeling is there, but it’s hard not to pine for the sheer power of winter.
But gradually, the season turns. Those of us captivated by swell in the Northern Hemisphere go through a transformation come September. The first chills of autumn signal that it’s time to ready ourselves. The sleeping giant that surrounds is about to awaken.
The water retains the glow of summer, but the days and nights begin to chill. The beast awakens. The swell emerges. Our eyes widen, and our desire to escape grows. We ready our gear, assemble our crews, and head to the select, secret spaces we know come alive best during winter’s prelude.
Quiet, frigid, wild — September and October is our well-earned reward for another summer spent patiently waiting. Once again, winter is about to show itself in full, precious force.
Winter descends. Head straight for it.
